Universal Periodic Review

Every 4 years, countries that are members of the United Nations must report to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR). The purpose of the UPR is to assess how far countries have improved human rights for their citizens and complied with international instruments.

The UPR is an opportunity for those who believe that the rights of citizens in Aotearoa New Zealand could be better respected to lobby the United Nations UPR working group.
During Aotearoa New Zealand’s 2nd UPR, ACYA and other children’s sector organisations raised key children’s rights issues. These included:
  • Child poverty
  • Discrimination against Māori and Pasifika children
  • Children affected by abuse and by domestic violence

The list of UPR recommendations reflects these concerns.
