NZ Agencies promoting Children's Rights

Office of the Children's Commissioner (OCC)

The Children’s Commissioner is a Crown entity set up by an Act of Parliament. Its functions include
  • promoting awareness of UNCROC
  • monitoring the implementation of UNCROC in Aotearoa New Zealand.

As part of this function, the Office of the Children’s Commissioner co-ordinates the UNCROC Monitoring Group (UMG). This is a group of non-government organisations (including ACYA) established in 2011 to monitor the implementation of UNCROC.
The Children’s Commissioner also has other important legal powers
  • to advocate for children
  • to monitor services provided to children in care.
For more on the work of the Children’s Commissioner, go to http://www.occ.org.nz/
Ministry of Social Development (MSD)

The Ministry of Social Development (MSD) is the government department primarily responsible for co-ordinating the government’s implementation of UNCROC.  For more information on MSD’s work regarding UNCROC go to http://www.msd.govt.nz/what-we-can-do/children-young-people/index.html
